Jan Weyenberg, principal of Riggs Elementary in Chandler, AZ, is no stranger to Boosterthon.

“I am proud to say that five years ago we were the first school in Arizona to host Boosterthon, and each year since has been even better than the year before,” said Jan.

But when it comes to fundraising, things haven’t always been so great for Riggs Elementary. Looking back, Jan recalls the frustrations of working with other fundraisers.

“Before Boosterthon we tried a number of different fundraisers—wrapping paper, candy, cookie dough, etc. Not only did we profit very little them, but also each of those fundraisers were time-consuming for both the PTO and staff.”

For Jan and her entire staff, other fundraisers were simply too much work for not enough profit.

“We had to keep track of orders, divide the products up by family, and deal with the issues from wrong or missing products. Parents felt like we were constantly asking for money in exchange for low-quality products. Though we made a small profit, it was nowhere near what we’ve made with Boosterthon each year.”

Over the past several years, Boosterthon has helped Riggs Elementary raise over $144,000.

Over the past several years, Boosterthon has helped Riggs Elementary raise over $144,000. According to Jan, those Boosterthon funds have all been used to purchase a number of educational resources for their students and staff. Resources like:

  • A Computer on Wheels (containing 30 laptops)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tablets
  • A Portable Sound System
  • Media upgrades to their Multi-Purpose Room
  • A variety of online subscriptions that support student learning – Accelerated Reader, Discovery Streaming, Kid Pix, Starfall, Time for Kids, Tumbleweed Press, Scholastic, Brainpop, and Learning A-Z
  • New playground equipment (including a much-loved Gaga Ball court)
  • Teachers have also been able to purchase items for their classrooms like Literature sets, Response systems, manipulatives, etc.

Jan told us that thanks to Boosterthon, her students have had the benefit of using technology hardware and software they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to purchase. Most importantly, she said, her students have benefitted educationally from the materials and programs teachers have bought for their classrooms.

When asked about the biggest reason why she continues to partner with Boosterthon year after year, Jan touched on two of our biggest differentiators: consistent financial results and our amazing team.

“I love Boosterthon for many reasons. Of course the financial benefit is amazing, but the Boosterthon experience goes well beyond just the fundraising. The Boosterthon team that works with our school each year is truly amazing. They bring such positive energy to the entire school community. You can feel it the minute they walk on campus!”

She went on to talk about the importance of Boosterthon’s world-class character program and annual giveback program.

“I love the focus on character, and the students enjoy interacting with the team during the daily huddles. We pride ourselves on providing community service to people in need, so Boosterthon’s annual giveback program has allowed us to help less fortunate children. We were very excited to host last year’s giveback event, and together we packed almost 5,000 meals for the local food bank.”

When asked how her staff felt about Boosterthon, Jan was effusive.

“My staff loves Boosterthon for many of the same reasons I do. They would tell you that unlike other fundraisers, they enjoy helping motivate their students rather than counting and keeping track of product orders. It really is the simplest fundraiser that I’ve ever experienced. It’s a true pleasure to work with a group of individuals who are so genuine, sincere, and ethical. I like to say that I am Boosterthon’s biggest cheerleader!”

When asked what she would say to a school who’s on the fence about partnering with Boosterthon, Jan had three words:

Just do it! The entire Boosterthon experience will positively impact your school community in more ways that you can imagine. I ask students regularly, ‘When you graduate from high school and you look back on your years at Riggs Elementary, what do you think you’ll remember?’ Inevitably I always hear the same response: ‘BOOSTERTHON!’ Don’t pass up the opportunity to have an experience that will have a lifelong impact on your community.”

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to serve amazing schools like Riggs and phenomenal educators like Jan. It’s why we do what we do—change the world by strengthening schools!
