This school year, Boosterthon students in schools across America have been excited about the 2011-2012 giveback project, Operation Playground.

We are proud to announce that 30 Boosterthon team members will be traveling to Guatemala June 11-15 to build playgrounds at three schools, host a sports camp, and serve communities.

guatemalaLast school year, we were able to donate 10,200 backpacks to people in need in Haiti with the help of our schools. This year, in honor of the "Epic Adventure" theme, Boosterthon planned its first-ever international service trip, a true adventure, open to all team members. This summer, team members from all across the country are serving students in Guatemala.

This year, students have been gathering pledges to help their school; during that time, Boosterthon has also been pledging to help students in Guatemala have a safe and fun place to play. Every time a Boosterthon student reaches $10 pledged per lap, we make a donation to buy playground equipment for three schools in Guatemala—by June, $20,000 - $25,000 will be pledged. The playgrounds are being built in the U.S., and shipped to Guatemala, so they’ll be up to top safety standards.

The Operation Playground Director, Tyler Yaken on our Atlanta Team, said that Boosterthon chose this project for several reasons.

"We believe we can bring a level of joy to students who have never seen a playground before. They can play on it for years, leaving a lasting impact.

Tyler also explained why Booseterthon would spend their time and resources building playgrounds in another country.

"Our mission as an organization is to Change the World During the school year, we are investing in students’ lives and raising funds for elementary schools, but in the summer, we have a little bit of down time. We do a service project every year to give back to communities in need."

Not only is the Boosterthon Team giving back to communities in Guatemala through playgrounds, but we are bringing the enthusiasm and zest for life that we are known for. It is going to be a trip that will undoubtedly change the lives of Boosterthon team members and Guatemalan students alike!

As the team prepares to serve schools in Guatemala, we will keep our fans in the loop on our Facebook page.
