Option 2: Partner With a Local Business for a Matching Donation Campaign

A great option if you want to maximize giving without increasing the number of donors.

Your PTO asks a local business to match donations up to a set amount (ex: $200, $300, $500, $1000).
When people know their gift will be doubled, they’re more likely to participate — even if they only donate a few dollars.

You’ll announce:

• The match amount and goal 
• The business you have partnered with
• That every donation given on Giving Tuesday will be doubled
• A thank-you post recognizing the business partner

This approach builds community partnerships and increases your PTO’s impact,  all without hosting a large event.

How to Ask a Local Business for a Giving Tuesday Match

A simple guide for PTO & PTA leaders

Partnering with a local business for a Giving Tuesday match is one of the easiest ways to double donations, build community support, and raise awareness for your school—all without adding extra work for families. Use this one-pager to help your PTO secure a match with confidence.

What Is a Matching Donation?

A matching donation is when a business agrees to match the total amount your PTO raises, up to a set limit (ex: $250, $500, or $1,000).
That means every dollar donated on Giving Tuesday becomes two dollars for your school.

Why Businesses Love It

Local businesses often say YES because of matching donations:

• Builds goodwill in the community
• Gets their business name in front of local families
• Allows them to support the school in a meaningful, high-impact way
• It is an affordable, controlled expense (they set the match limit!)
• Shows they care about education, students, and families

Step-by-Step: How to Ask for a Match

1. Make a Short List of Businesses

Reach out to:

• Family-owned businesses
• Real estate agents
• Insurance offices
• Coffee shops
• Restaurants
• Pediatric dentists/orthodontists
• Tutoring centers
• Fitness studios
• Service-based businesses (salons, auto shops, etc.)

2. Reach Out With a Simple Message

You can contact them by email, Facebook Messenger, phone, or in person.

Example script:

*Hi! I’m with the [School Name] PTO. We’re celebrating Giving Tuesday by raising funds for [specific project/need].

Would your business be interested in partnering with us by matching donations?

This means every donation made on Giving Tuesday will be doubled thanks to your support. 

It’s a simple, high-impact way to support local students and families. We would proudly recognize your business on all promotions, social posts, emails, and thank-you messages. Would you be open to learning more?”

3. Agree on a Match Amount

This is the maximum donation they will match. Keep it manageable and realistic for both sides. Common amounts:

• $250
• $500
• $750
• $1000
• $2000

4. Get Their Logo & Preferred Recognition

Ask for:

• Business logo
• How they’d like to be recognized
• Any tagline or link they want included

You’ll use this in flyers, social media, and thank-you posts.

5. Follow Up With a Thank-You

After Giving Tuesday, send a short but meaningful thank-you:

Thank you for supporting our school through a Giving Tuesday match! Because of your generosity, we raised $[total], doubled to $[matched total]. Our community loved partnering with you, and we deeply appreciate your support.
