Fun Run vs. Color Run vs. Glow Run vs. DanceFit: How to Pick

10/07/2026

Every PTO or PTA board eventually lands on the same question: out of all the types of school fundraisers out there, which one actually fits our school? Boosterthon runs five different event formats, a Fun Run, a Color Run, a Glow Run, DanceFit, and Fit Games, and each one raises money the same way, through direct family donations instead of product sales, but they look and feel very different on event day.

Picking the wrong fit doesn’t just mean a less exciting event. It can mean squeezing an outdoor racetrack into a school with no field, or planning a rain-or-shine backup for an event that was never designed to move indoors. Getting the format right the first time saves your board a lot of last-minute scrambling, and it’s usually the difference between an event kids beg to do again next year and one that fizzles.

Picking between them usually comes down to three things: how much outdoor space you have, whether you want a rain-or-shine indoor option, and what will actually get your students excited to participate. This guide covers what makes each event different, then puts them side by side in one school fundraiser event comparison so your board can decide without reading five separate pages.

School Fundraiser Event Comparison
Event Type Best For Energy Level Setup Needs
Fun Run Schools that want the classic, proven option High Outdoor field or lot with room for a racetrack
Color Run Schools with older elementary grades wanting extra visual excitement High Outdoor track plus color powder stations
Glow Run Schools that need a weather-proof, indoor alternative High Indoor gym with room to set up a lit track
DanceFit Schools with limited space or students who aren’t drawn to running High Indoor space, from a classroom up to a full gym
Fit Games Schools wanting a game-show format instead of a run or dance High Indoor gym with screen setup for the video-led rounds

The Five Event Types, Briefly

Each event has its own dedicated page with full details on setup, timeline, and what’s included. Here’s the short version of each:

  • Fun Run: The original and most requested Boosterthon event. Students run, dance, and skip around a themed racetrack outdoors while classmates and family cheer them on. It’s the safest choice if you’re not sure which event to pick, since it has the longest track record and works for nearly any elementary school with outdoor space.
  • Color Run: Builds on the fun run format by adding color stations along the track that release bursts of safe, washable cornstarch powder as students pass through. It keeps the same outdoor setup and inclusive, run-or-walk structure, with an added visual payoff that tends to land especially well with older elementary grades.
  • Glow Run: Takes the same run-or-walk concept indoors, transforming a gymnasium into a neon track with lights, music, and glow effects while students wear white or neon clothing. It’s the pick for schools that want the energy of a fun run without depending on the weather.
  • DanceFit: An indoor dance-a-thon built around Just Dance choreography, with schools able to pick songs and routines to match their student population. Because it doesn’t require running or a track, it works in spaces as small as a classroom or as large as a gym.
  • Fit Games: A video-led, game-show-style event hosted by Dude Perfect, built around four rounds of team challenges, trivia, and fast-paced movement games. It’s the option for schools that want something completely different from a run or dance format, with a gym-based setup and a built-in entertainment draw.

Questions to Ask Before Your Board Decides

Before you bring a recommendation back to the full board, run through these questions:

  • Do we have reliable outdoor space? If yes, fun run and color run are both on the table. If not, you’re choosing among glow run, DanceFit, and Fit Games.
  • What time of year is the event? An outdoor event scheduled for a rainy season needs a solid backup plan, or it’s worth moving indoors from the start.
  • What’s our gym or field size? DanceFit is the most flexible on space, since it can run in anything from a classroom to a full gym, while fun run, color run, and glow run all need room for a full track.
  • What gets our students talking? Some student bodies light up for color and music, others respond more to a game-show format like Fit Games. Ask your teachers and specials staff, they usually know.
  • Have we done this event type before? A repeat event can lose some of its spark. Alternating event types year to year is a common way boards keep the fundraiser feeling fresh.

Finding the Best Fundraiser Event Type for Your Elementary School

If your school has reliable outdoor space and a fall or spring event date, a fun run or color run is usually the simplest choice, and the color run is worth the upgrade if your students respond well to sensory, photo-friendly moments. If you’re working around unpredictable weather, a smaller footprint, or an indoor-only gym schedule, glow run, DanceFit, and Fit Games all solve that problem in different ways: glow run keeps the run-or-walk format but moves it inside, DanceFit swaps running for dance entirely, and Fit Games swaps both for a team-game format built around a well-known brand.

There’s no wrong answer among the five, since all of them are built on the same inclusive, no-sell fundraising model where every student can participate regardless of what their family gives. The real decision is about fit: what space you have, what time of year you’re running the event, and which format your students will talk about for the rest of the year. Once you’ve narrowed it down to one or two options, each event’s dedicated page walks through setup, timeline, and what’s included so your board can finalize the details and get your event on the calendar.
